2009 ANNUAL PRINT COLLECTION |

Fifty years ago, the first catalogued collection of prints from Cape Dorset was exhibited at the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. With the support of the federal department of Northern Affairs, the collection was then exhibited in Ottawa at the Railway Committee Room of the House of Commons and at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General. His Excellency, the Right Honourable Georges Vanier, was so delighted with the images that he agreed to be the Official Patron of the newly established West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative for its inaugural year.
In keeping with this historic precedent, we invited Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, to be the Patron of the 50th anniversary year (2009) of the establishment of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative. She has most graciously accepted our invitation, and has provided an introduction for the upcoming National Gallery of Canada's exhibition, Uuturautiit: Cape Dorset Celebrates 50 Years of Printmaking, curated by Christine Lalonde and Leslie Boyd Ryan. Several artists from Cape Dorset will be traveling to Ottawa for the exhibition opening on October 22nd, as well as to meet with Her Excellency.
